I received some touching thank you notes and great feedback from some grade 8 boys after a workshop in May. Peter wrote, “We all learned something, whether it was how to calm ourselves down before presenting, or how to put ourselves in our work.”
In our workshop the students shared some of the poems that had been working on in class and I shared a few of my poems. In that exchange, we connected in a really great way. Kwame wrote, “you were really open to us, confident, funny and pretty much happy to see us.”
I was. I was cheered on by the honesty and sense of connection this group of young people shared. I’m inspired when I see poetry serving as a tool to connect people.
It’s very sweet that Omar wrote, “[I] hope your poems will take you far in life.” And I wish all the best for the all the students in that class.
