Dear writer,

It can be hard to make time to face all the challenges that come up in your writing life. Sometimes it’s a struggle to build consistency. Instead of returning to your writing practice, you prioritize other, less important things. Sometimes instead of writing, you sit at your desk and stare out the window. What happened to your focus?

The ways in which you get stuck are full of important clues to help you find your way back. I can offer you skilled support to help you unpack what’s happening and get you writing again.

Come spend an hour writing with others and strengthen your writing habit. Whether you’re writing poetry, fiction, plays, essays or copy, I’m here to support you to put in the time and build your practice.

Why work with Tanya

I have been telling my stories for more than a decade, finding myself in and out of writing workshops, residencies, classes, on stages, and in communities of writers working to tell the truth.

Bio:

Tanya is queer poet and educator committed to access and equity. As a Toronto based poet who facilitates spoken word workshops, Tanya has more than 10 years of experience as a professional poet and continues to innovate the art form. Tanya is a Toronto Poetry Slam organizer and a member of the League of Canadian Poets. They have worked with the Ontario Arts Council’s Artist in Education program, Harbourfront Centre, Louder Than A Bomb Toronto, and TDSB Creates. Tanya’s first book, Piecing It Together, was published in 2009 by Thee Hellbox Press, a printing press making innovative, hand-made books. Their second chapbook, what breaks me open, was published in 2015, and is available at the National Library of Canada, the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, and is translated into Turkish. Tanya is currently working on a third chapbook titled Please Bring Me.

FAQ’S

Can I bring something I’m working on to the workshop?

Yes you can. There will be timed intervals for writing where I encourage free writign and offer a prompt. If you’d rather use that timed interval to work on something in process please do. The arc of the workshops at this time is a process of generating new writing, doing some editing, and practicing our habit of “sit in the chair and get writing.”

Will I have to share out loud with the group?

No, however there will be opportunities to share what you’ve written. Consent is important and you always have the right to pass.

What if I’m brand new to creative writing?

Wonderful! Welcome to the club. I love life-long learners, and try to take a beginner’s mind and fresh perspective to my long time writing practice. As a new writer you might have discovered that actually sitting down to write is one of the hardest parts. I want to help you get started on a writing path.

Who else is coming?

We are usually a small group of new and established writers. The range of experience in the zoom room can help to offer moments of peer learning and exhancge. These workshops are process oriented, not perfection driven, or competition based. Know that both new and established writers struggle with the writing process. All are welcome.

Are there refunds or exchanges?

If you are unable to attend after registering, you can use your registration fee towards another workshop.

Will you be doing this again?

Dates for April 2021 will be announced soon.
